Engineering vs Medicine

Students across the world find themselves at the crossroads after completing their high school. For toppers, the decision to opt between engineering and medicine is the most difficult task. Of course, the choice is never entirely yours and is influenced by several external factors. These include your parents, the success of your elder siblings in a particular academic area, your teachers and, for some, even friends. Not to say that you should ignore them but the best bet is to listen to your inner-self and do some search on both these fields before deciding on one. Following are some considerations you should take into account:
Ease of finding a job
How many doctors or nurses have you come across who said they were unemployed? The answer would be less than ten. Yes! If you are the one who wants to land up in a job immediately after completion of your course, medicine is the right specialty for you. There is little doubt that engineering profession has too many opportunities; however, finding a desired job can be a tad difficult.
Leisure time
Are you a kind of a person who prefers to work five days a week and wants to try lots of other things during the weekend? In that case, you may opt for engineering. There are several doctors and nurses who say they have little time for themselves and they have to be ready to work during any time of the day and week.
Income
Engineers can be found at many levels in the organization. You can see some of them running companies as CEOs and you may even see some engineers providing low paying technical support services. Hence, there is no certainty on income levels. On the other hand, people in medicine profession invariably earn decent income.
Sensitivity
Many medicine students leave this field after first three months of study. The probable rationale: I am allergic to smell in operation theater; I couldn't dissect the frog; the sight of dead bodies haunts me in my dreams. If you can set aside all these issues and look at the larger picture of treating the ill, you can take up medical profession.
Creativity
There is no limit to creativity in engineering profession. Some engineering specializations such as automobile and architecture are perfect example of these. Who knows you could be the next Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, and end up constructing the ninth wonder of the world! But medicine is a much strict discipline.
Social Purpose
There is no better way to save human lives than through medicine. There are hundreds of ailments that are yet to be overcome. If you empathize with living beings and want to make a change to lives then go for medicine.
Social status
The doctors are at the top of the social hierarchy in terms of respect and recognition. People treat them gently and always want to make friends with them. If you crave for such attention then becoming a doctor can fulfill your desires; however, there is a caveat to it: You can never take your personal conduct for granted.
The above mentioned considerations are general in nature and are highly debatable. You may find exceptions in both engineering and medicine. Nevertheless, these guidelines may serve you a great deal in knowing some of the basic characteristics in both these professions. The important thing is that you should not decide on a career just because you think it's cool. Your grades in high school, your priorities in life, your finances and several other things will dictate your decision. But doing basic research on both these specializations is utmost important before choosing. Once chosen, the next step will be to secure admission in a good academic institution that will add real value to your knowledge and career. Remember, getting a seat in a reputed college is half the work done. Other rewards will come due to your perseverance, hard work, and passion for the job.

The Human Nervous System - Structure and Function - All Explained

The nervous system is a regulatory system that controls a variety of body functions. The nervous system can detect changes occurring in various organs and take corrective action when needed to maintain the constancy of the internal environment. The nervous system also regulates activities that change almost instantly, such as muscle contractions and perception of danger. The body is made up of many receptors that receive incoming information about what is happening within the body and what is happening in the outside environment. Specifically, these receptors represent our eyes, ears, skin, nose, and stomach. We act on that information via the nervous system.

The basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system is the neuron. These are elongated, highly branched cells. The body contains about 100 billion neurons. Neurons respond to electrical and chemical signals, conduct electrical impulses, and release chemical regulators. Overall, neurons allow us to perceive what is occurring in our environment. They help us engage in learning, store vital information in memory, and control the body's voluntary (and involuntary) actions.

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system (CNS). The brain stores information, reacts to incoming information, solves problems, and generates thoughts. In addition, the brain plans a course of action based on the other sensory inputs. Responses to the stimuli are carried out mostly through the peripheral nervous system (PNS) to accommodate one's will.

Simply put, the nervous system receives information through stimulation of various receptors, processes this information, and sends out signals for an action that needs to be taken through its various branches. Actual transmission of the signal uti­lizes a change in the sodium and potassium concentration in the neuron. There is an influx of sodium and a loss of potassium as the message is sent. Ion concentrations are then restored to normal amounts in the neuron and it is ready to conduct another message.

When the signal must bridge a gap (synapse) between the branches of different neurons, the message is generally converted to a chemical signal called a neurotransmitter. The neurotransmitter, itself is then released into the gap, thereby passing the signal from one neuron to another. Another type of cell may also be at the receiving end of the neurotransmitter, such as a muscle cell. If the signal is sent to an­other neuron, this allows it to continue on to its final destination. The neurotransmitters used in this process are often made from common nutrients found in foods, such as amino acids. Examples are the amino acid tryptophan being converted to the neurotransmitter serotonin, and the amino acid tyrosine being converted to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.

Other nutrients also play a role in the nervous system. Calcium is needed for the release of neurotransmitters from neurons. Vitamin B-12 plays a role in the formation of a myelin sheath, which provides a form of insulation around specific parts of most neurons. Finally, a regular supply of carbohydrate in the form of glucose is important for providing for the energy needs of the brain. The brain can use other fuels, but gen­erally relies on glucose.

Twin Sisters Pay £60,000 on Surgery to Look Completely Identical


While most of us strive to assert our individuality and simply abhor de idea of ever being confused for someone else, a pair of 34-year-old twin sisters from the UK are exactly the opposite of that. Having grown used to do everything together, Jo and Kerry Burton have started even to have plastic surgery at the same time, under the hand of the same doctor to
make sure people continue not to be able to tell them apart, as the Daily Mail can confirm.

Jo and Kerry have always done everything together, from coming down with chickenpox to learning to love the same things and have the same hobbies. When they were 21, Jo decided to have corrective surgery on her nose, so Kerry was left with no other option than to do the same, or risk having a twin that looked different from her. Since then, the pair has undertaken a vast series of procedures, from getting Botox jabs for smooth out wrinkles to having a permanent tattoo eyeliner and implants put in. The total cost rises, according to the Mail, to £60,000 and the sisters don't exclude the possibility of getting more surgery
either.

"It might sound barmy to some to have cosmetic surgery just because your twin is having it. But we would hate to look different, so we had to have the cosmetic surgery together. We both had chickenpox together as children and we had the same hobbies, such as Brownies and dancing - and so our identical cosmetic surgery has followed on from that." Kerry tells the Mail about the one decision that changed their life completely, while also allowing them to grow old together still looking identical.

It started with the nose job Jo wanted to get. A few years later, the sisters started getting Botox for the wrinkles around the eyes and expression lines, claiming they couldn't possibly see themselves living without the jabs now. Later on, they also got implants for & pound;4,500 for each set, and underwent surgery at the same time, in the same operation room, with their initials written on their abdomen so that the doctor would not mistake the one for the other. "We went in on the same day and once again the surgeon performed identical surgery, writing our initials in pen on our tummies so that once under the anesthetic, he didn't muddle us up." Kerry says.

To the cost of surgery, the sisters can also add £20,400 in hair color and extensions so far, £10,000 in Botox, £4,000 in facials, £2,000 in spray tans, and manicures and pedicures for £3,000. With a grand total of £60,000 to continue to look identical despite the passing of the years, the Burton sisters admit they will probably be getting more surgery for the same purpose in the future as well.

How to Keep Yourself Healthy in the Holy Month of RAMADAN


During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one's weight.

In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours.

Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates).

Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates).

Fiber-containing foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, marrow, spinach, and other herbs like the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit, especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc.

The foods eaten should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problems.

AVOID:
* Fried and fatty foods.
* Foods containing too much sugar.
* Over-eating especially in Suhoor (Sahari).
* Too much tea in Suhoor (Sahari). Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day.
* Smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan.
* Smoking is unhealthy and one should stop completely.
EAT:
* Complex carbohydrates in Suhoor (Sahari) so that the food lasts longer making you less hungry.
* Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food.
* Dates are excellent source of sugar, fiber, carbohydrates, potassium and magnesium.
* Almonds are rich in protein and fiber with less fat.
* Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates.

DRINK:
As much water or fruit juices as possible between Iftar and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time.

CONSTIPATION:
Constipation can cause piles (hemorrhoids), fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling.
Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fiber in the diet.
Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, use bran in baking, brown flour when making bread.

INDIGESTION AND WIND:
Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks like Cola also produce gas.
Remedy: Do not over-eat, drink fruit juices or better still drink water. Avoid fried foods.

LETHARGY (low blood pressure):
Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with "low blood pressure". This tends to occur towards the afternoon.
Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake.
Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake.

Caution:
Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. People with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their doctor.

HEADACHE:
Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with "low blood pressure", the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar.
Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR:
Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Causes in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates, especially in Suhoor (Sahari). The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop.
Remedy: Eat something in Suhoor (Sahari) and limit sugar-containing foods and drinks.

Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication in Ramadan, consult your doctor.

MUSCLE CRAMPS:
Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods.
Remedy: Eat foods rich in the above minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates.

Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor.
PEPTIC ULCERS, HEART BURN, GASTRITIS AND HIATUS HERNIA:
Increased acid levels in the empty stomach in Ramadan aggravate the above conditions. It presents as a burning feeling in the stomach area under the ribs and can extend up to the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and cola drinks worsen these conditions.

Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before Ramadan.

KIDNEY STONES:
Kidney stones may occur in people who have less liquids to drink. Therefore, it is essential to drink extra liquids so as to prevent stone formation.

JOINT PAINS:
Causes: During Ramadan, when extra salah are performed the pressure on the knee joints increases. In the elderly and those with arthritis this may result in pain, stiffness, swelling and discomfort.

Remedy: Lose weight so that the knees do not have to carry any extra load. Exercise the lower limbs before Ramadan so that they can be prepared for the additional strain.

Being physically fit allows greater fulfillment, thus enabling one to be able to perform Salah with ease.

Signs, Symptoms and common causes of Miscarriage

A miscarriage (also termed spontaneous abortion) is any pregnancy that spontaneously ends before the fetus can survive. Any vaginal bleeding, other than spotting, during early pregnancy is considered a threatened miscarriage. Vaginal bleeding is very common in early pregnancy. About one out of every four pregnant women has some bleeding during the first few months. About half of these women stop bleeding and complete a normal pregnancy.

Miscarriage is the most common type of pregnancy loss, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Studies reveal that anywhere from 10-25% of all clinically recognized pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Chemical pregnancies may account for 50-75% of all miscarriages. This occurs when a pregnancy is lost shortly after implantation, resulting in bleeding that occurs around the time of her expected period. The woman may not realize that she conceived when she experiences a chemical pregnancy.

Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion is the natural or spontaneous end of a pregnancy at a stage where the embryo or the fetus is incapable of surviving, generally defined in humans at a gestation of prior to 20 weeks. Miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy. The medical term "spontaneous abortion" is used in reference to miscarriages because the medical term "abortion" refers to any terminated pregnancy, deliberately induced or spontaneous, although in common parlance it refers specifically to active termination of pregnancy.

Some miscarriages occur before women recognize that they are pregnant. About 15% of fertilized eggs are lost before the egg even has a chance to implant (embed itself) in the wall of the uterus. A woman would not generally identify this type of miscarriage. Another 15% of conceptions are lost before eight weeks' gestation. Once fetal heart function is detected in a given pregnancy, the chance of miscarriage is less than 5%.

Signs and Symptoms of Miscarriage;

The signs of a miscarriage are the onset of bleeding, usually with abdominal cramps (like a period) in a woman who's pregnant - although in early miscarriage she may not yet be aware she's pregnant.

Bleeding may be only slight spotting, or it can be quite severe. Your health care provider will ask about how much you have bled—usually the number of pads you've soaked through. You will also be asked about blood clots or whether you saw any tissue.

Inevitable Miscarriage:

This is the occurrence of severe vaginal bleeding and/or cramps in a pregnant woman, indicating that no medical treatment can avert a miscarriage. At this point, the amniotic membranes have ruptured, the cervix is dilated, and the membranes, fetus and placenta are on their way to being expelled. The woman's clinician should be contacted immediately, and hospitalization may be necessary.

Pain:
You may have pelvic cramps, abdominal pain, or a persistent, dull ache in your lower back. Pain may start a few hours to several days after bleeding has begun.

Abdominal cramping, genitals, thighs, buttocks and lower back pain are the signs of miscarriage that usually occur soon after the vaginal bleeding commences. Unusual pain in the pelvic region is another miscarriage symptom.

Some women experience cramping, spotting, abdominal pain, fever, weakness, vomiting, or back pain. Spotting is not always a sign of a miscarriage; many women normally experience it early on in pregnancy. But just to be safe, if you have spotting or any of these other symptoms anytime during your pregnancy, it's a good idea to talk with your doctor.

It may not seem much like it, but sinus infections are fast becoming one of the medical conditions that consume a lot of financial resources for treatment.

Consider the following information:
In the United States, the incidence of sinus infections has increased 18% over the last decade. This translates to nearly 40 million Americans who have experienced a sinus infection. The cost of sinusitis includes surgery; hospital confinement; antibiotics and other medications; physician visits and of course, the missed days at work because of the physical discomforts and pains associated with it.

The Sinus Profile:

The sinuses, or sinus cavities, are air-filled cavities in the skull that surround the eye sockets. Among humans, there are four pairs. Each pair bears a unique name and has a different location. The maxillary sinuses are in the cheek area below the eyes, while the ethmoid sinuses lie between the eyes. The sinuses above the eyes are called frontal sinuses and finally, the sphenoid sinuses are located behind the eyes.

These sinuses communicate with the nose through small openings known as ostia (singular form: ostium) and are ventilated with each breath. The openings from the sinuses into the nose are quite small, ranging in size from one to five millimeters. Everyday, the nose and sinuses produce about two quarts of mucus, which is a clear, slippery liquid that functions to trap debris and bacteria; as well as to prevent the sinus and nasal linings from drying out. Under normal conditions, mucus doesn't remain stagnant within the cavities. It is cleared from the sinuses and moved towards the opening or the back of the nose by the action of cilia, which are fine, hair-like projections found on the surface of the cells that make up the sinus lining.

What Goes Wrong:

Sinus infection usually begins when an inflammatory process happens within the mucous membranes that line the nasal and sinus cavities. The inflammation, which is often coupled with the secretion of copious amounts of mucus, is a reaction to a lot of triggering factors like medications, dust, pollen or viral/bacterial upper respiratory tract infection. Because of the inflammation, the sinus ostia are blocked, making the drainage of mucus difficult. The stagnant mucus quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. When the microbes invade the mucous linings, this is the start of a sinus infection and soon, the person will be experiencing the usual manifestations associated with this condition.

Despite the aforementioned information on the progressively rising incidence of sinus infections, the condition is very manageable. It is easy to diagnose using visualization techniques like x-ray, CT scan, endoscopy, etc. Treatments are wide range- from do-it-yourself cures to sinus surgery (but surgeries are done only as last resort). About half of people who experience panic attacks during the day experience nocturnal panic attacks. Even though these attacks are rare (only about 10% occurrence), people who experience these find it more frightening than those that occur during the day. Nightmares, on the other hand, occur during the REM (rapid eye movement) phase or the dream phase. There is another type of disorder, more common among children, which manifests in symptoms very much like panic or anxiety attacks, but this kind of sleeping disorder occurs during deep phases of sleep. Sleep panic attacks are mainly influenced by the events during the daytime. Consumption of alcohol, drugs, depression, and stress, may also influence these.

How does the media influence Anorexia on teenagers?

When children see these images on television, in magazines, in songs, movies, etc- then it's no wonder that the rate of eating disorders among teenagers is rising rapidly, and now parents are feverishly searching for an answer.

Instead of blaming themselves, the media and others- it's important to remember that some teenagers are more susceptible to eating disorders than others, and some are going to develop Anorexia or another eating disorder with or without outside influences such as media or peers.

  • And how do we stop the effects of this negative influence?
The media has become firmly focused for years, on a person's outer appearance or outer beauty. In the days of Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth, women in the media were portrayed as beautiful, and they weren't "bone thin." This trend has changed over the last several years, and now unless an actress or model is thin to the point of practically being able to see bones, she is criticized as being "fat."

The latest example of this trend, is the recent come-back of Britney Spears- after she'd given birth to two children, she was ridiculed for wearing a skimpier outfit, due to being "fat." The problem is, although she'd had two children, she was far from fat- yet the media criticized her for daring to show her "less than perfect" body on national television. With issues like this, it's no wonder that children and teenagers are being bombarded with messages of what perfection is and how to "be" perfect.

When does the media influences anorexia on teenagers? If one notices television programming and magazines geared specifically for teenagers, they'll notice that it's extremely unusual- rare even- for an actor, actress, or other star to be "over-weight"- or even of a normal weight. From the pre-teen years to the middle-teen years, teenagers are bombarded with messages, whether direct or indirect, of the need to be "perfect" and what "perfect" is.

If Marilyn Monroe or Rita Hayworth were around today, they'd be labeled as "fat." What a twist, and a shocking example of how our society has misplaced standards of beauty and "perfection!" Two well-known, absolutely gorgeous, healthy-weight, sex-symbols and icons of beauty- now would be considered "flawed."

The media influences teens' self-esteem and self-worth when it constantly bombards them with what society now considers ideal, and a distorted perception of what's "perfect." To stop the negative influence that the media has on children and teenagers, it's a good idea to limit exposure of body-image damaging programs, magazines and it's good to encourage a healthy body image.

How Safe Are Nuclear Power Plants and their health Risks - United States and Worldwide


The recent tragedy in Japan has driven home to many in the United States the dangers present in our own backyard. While we are reminded of our vulnerability to natural disaster, a particular emerging concern is over the safety of our own nuclear power plants. As the leading producer of nuclear energy, the U.S. has 104 active nuclear power plants, with more slated to be built. Though the debate has raged for decades over the safety of these plants, recent events and even U.S. history have proven there is a definite risk inherent in producing nuclear power.

After an earthquake and subsequent tsunami critically damaged Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, workers and residents were imperiled by the risk of exposure to radiation. While a full meltdown of the reactor cores has thus far been narrowly avoided, damage to the plant has already begun to show effects in the surrounding area. Tests have shown radiation in the area produce, tap and sea water, as well as readings of dangerous plutonium in the soil. Nearby residents were evacuated when the dangers became known, but workers have risked their lives to remain behind to stabilize the reactors. What can't be fully understood at this point is the ultimate effect of exposure on residents and workers' health both immediately and long-term.

When the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine experienced a complete destruction of its core in 1986, the worst case scenario occurred. The radiation released in the area was estimated to equal that of 400 Hiroshima atomic bombs. Though a full meltdown was avoided and the threat contained, forty thousand gallons of radioactive wastewater was released into a nearby river. Sadly, in the United States, these risks still exist. A report by the Nuclear Safety Project cited fourteen "near misses" ("events that raised the risk to the reactor core") in U.S. nuclear power plants in 2010.

For humans, exposure to radiation can cause anything from no clear effects or a mild burn to the destruction of bone marrow, birth defects, cancers and/or death. Exposure can be immediate or gradual, and damage may not emerge until years later. This is a particular concern for nuclear power workers, as even mild levels of exposure over long periods of time can have a cumulative effect on one's health. With this in mind, more people are looking closely at the nuclear plants in their own states.

Recent events are an important reminder to always be aware of the real risks associated with living near or working at nuclear energy plants or their waste storage sites. Be mindful of evacuation routes and plans, as well as the symptoms of radiation exposure.
